Tall City on the World Wide Web ...

Much of the world's attention was rightly focused on the city of Washington today. But the town of Midland, Texas, also had a moment in the national/world spotlight. "Bush, family arrive in Texas: Thousands greet him in Midland" was the headline for this report from msnbc.com, accompanied by the following video clip ...

Not all the attention was positive, though. The New York Times (which I shall not grace with a link) ran a story about "the small crowd" that showed up to greet Bush, and his speech "rebutting Obama's inauguration." The accompanying comments truly sickened me, making the former president's remarkable displays of grace and goodwill stand out in even greater contrast to the attitudes of those whose hatred for the man seem to know no bounds.

Sorry. I was too quick on the "Publish" button. "rebutting Obama's inauguration" should have read "rebutting Obama's inauguration speech."

Eric, you raise more than one good point in your post ... "Comments" are one of the double-edge swords of new media. For anyone who has worked in the media - even for a little while - it doesn't take long to field all kinds of comments from all kinds of people.

In the past, somebody would walk into the front office, rant for a while, then adjust their tin-foil hat and stomp out. Okay, they had their say ... they brought their views to our attention, and that was it. Nowadays, though, comments have no boundaries, and everyone must endure them. Even those that would sicken other readers are now provided a broad platform on the world wide web.
