Short-Timer .....

A little over fifteen days ago, I gave my two-weeks' notice at work ..... the decision to leave brings an end to an association with KWES-TV that began seventeen years ago ..... throughout that time, in one capacity or another, I have been working for NewsWest 9 ..... even when I was living and working full-time in Fort Stockton, editing their newspaper, I was still working part-time for the television station as their 'Big Bend stringer.'

The last few years, I've been the station's website editor ...... and in that capacity, I've learned a lot about the virtual business, and the actual community in which I live and work ..... and new, better ways to serve that community.

But now, that job is growing in new directions, with new parameters and new requirements that I am unable - and, admittedly, unwilling - to meet.

I'm still on board, because ... well, after seventeen years, one doesn't just rush out the door ..... there's the matter of hiring someone to take over, and bringing them up to speed ..... doing your best to hand over the reins, the wheel, the helm - pick your own metaphor - smoothly and efficiently ..... I owe them that.

Most of my co-workers were also my friends .... and it would be hard to find a better bunch of friends. Some of my oldest friends are gone, passed away .... many others have moved on to other jobs, at other stations or in other markets ..... makes no difference really ... they are remembered, and remembered well.

More than a few of you out there, in the blogosphere, have had some hand, at one time or another, in shaping and directing our online product ..... I am grateful to you all for your generosity with offering suggestions, and your patience with the time it took to give the good suggestions their due consideration and application.

So, where to from here? I have no idea. If you know of any prospects, e-mail me. On a related note, if you'd like to try your hand as an Internet Content Director ..... now's your chance.

Yowza! Blessings to you, bro.

Maybe you should inquire (get it?) with your pal Frank at Books, Inq. You could move back east.

We have trees here.

Jim, thank you for the blessings, they are much-needed ..... we're not hurting, at the moment, but it feels - I don't know funny, the idea of not working .....

As for heading back east ....... I don't think I can ..... I've been spoiled by these southwest winters! Now, if the Inquirer was to open up a bureau in, say, Hilton Head, South Carolina!!!

Southwest Winters... alert the oxymoron police.

Jeff,

Surely there is something you've thought about doing for a long time?

Now sounds like a perfect time to, I don't know, write a book or two?

I would want mine personally autographed, of course. For free. The autograph, not the book.

Hmmm, maybe a collaboration with a wordy (not especially worldly) North Texas woman, or similar?

Jim, "Oxymoron" ..... isn't that the guy who sells sensational cleaning componds on television? .....

Miss Pattie, hmmmmm, THAT is something worth considering ..... we need to meet over milkshakes at Purple Cow sometime .....

Jeff, I've been terribly remiss in making it by to visit with my neighbors in the 'sphere, so I'm just now finding out about this turn of events. Well.

I do suspect that the urgency to find something else is well-tempered by the fact that things are so good in the oil bidness these days and your wife's job is a suitable safety net for a while anyway. Just don't be like me and get used to being a kept man. ;-)

Seriously, I'll be praying for a great opportunity to present itself. You deserve it.

Jeff, blessings and congratulations to you!I've been pretty busy and so, like Eric, am just catching up.

I know it was hard when Jay left KWES, that y'all are all like family. I feel for you there...but true friends stay friends, and you can take comfort in that.

Please stay in touch and if I can assist in any way, please let me know. It will be exciting to see what you do next!!

Eric, Janie, and everyone ..... thank you for the kind words, the encouragements and the prayers ..... they have provided comfort and encouragement .....

Eric, as for the kept-man concept, I'm giving it some consideration, at least for the short term. as long as oil remains above $60-a-barrel, and happy days are here again ... :-)
